A Page in the Life of... Chris York

Describe a typical Sunday:
A “typical” Sunday is me leaving home at about 9.30a.m, as we live in town at the moment, to get through to St John’s early enough so I can help get the music equipment set up for Paul and the choir. After church I usually stay for a coffee, then it’s back home for lunch.

With pages clean and new;
And what is written on each page
will now depend on you.

Erasing every wrong;
For once a year - or day - is spent,
It is forever gone.

Vicar's Verbals: February 2016 : St Johns Church : Ainsdale

There has been a lot of discussion in the media recently regarding whether or not we should change the anthem that is sung at large sporting events involving England teams due to the fact that ‘God save the Queen’ is not specifically for those who are English, but those who are British.

Child Friendly Church Award Celebration

Our service began with an invitation - played out on the organ and led by the choir - to "Come on and Celebrate" and that's just what we all did!

The school hall was packed with eighty five adults and thirty five children, as our extended church family joined together for the presentation of the Child Friendly Church Award. It was lovely to have children and members of congregations across all our services, leaders and members of the uniformed organisations and our school, including the Headteacher, Mr Paul Hooton.

Travelling Nativity

St John’s have two travelling nativity sets which travel around the parish during Advent, spending one night at each house, until they come back to church in time for our Crib Service on Christmas Eve.

They are accompanied by a flock of knitted sheep and each family gets to look after a knitted sheep until Christmas Eve. You will be given contact details for the families on either side of you on the list so that you can arrange to collect or drop off the figures with them at a convenient time.

The two years of training have been hard work but very rewarding and I have learnt a lot. The licensing service was very special and knowing so many people from St John’s had come to support me made it even more special. Thank you too for all the cards and very generous gifts I received.

Chris helps Raise the Church Roof by losing the pounds!

Churchgoer Chris York has raised more than £1000 for the St. John’s Church Ainsdale Development Fund by losing the pounds.

Chris, who sings in the Choir and a former Church Warden, lost 4 stone 8 pound in weight during 2013. He decided to shed the pounds after Vicar, Rev Graham Birch challenged parishioners to all do something to help raise money towards restoring the church roof and building.

The children who took part in the toddle were Amelia, Jack, Matthew, Alex, baby James and baby Isla.

Jack and Matthew did a great job collecting £55 from people in the village as we toddled through Ainsdale.

Each child got their family and friends to sponsor them. Members of the church have also sponsored, so we are yet to know the total amount.

An Evening of Entertainment at St John Stone

Fundraising at St John's Church AinsdaleWhat an evening was put on for us by our friends at St John Stone!

If you were of a certain age Jamie & His Band pitched their evening’s entertainment in large part at the “baby boomers” in the audience; this was an evening of sing-a-long and dance for all!

For almost three hours there were ballads, old standards and plenty of 60’s “rock ‘n roll” all of which was much enjoyed by an audience of between 170-200 people from both churches together with their friends.

We can only express our sincere thanks to St John Stone for such a wonderful evening of friendship and dance; Father Bernard, on behalf of his Church, was able to donate to the Development Fund a magnificent total of £2,030.

Oh What A Night!

ceilidh-smThe recent Ceilidh that was organised jointly by our Roof Raisers Committee and the School PTA was both a fantastic evening and a huge fundraising success.

The music and dancing was wonderfully led by the Union Street Band who ensured that the dancing was both easy to learn and fun to participate in – an especially important detail for the many, like myself, who had little or no experience! The whole evening had a great atmosphere with all ages joining together as one big happy family and really putting the FUN into fundraising.

A special thanks needs to go to all those who made it such a great event: especially to Paul Hooton, Sarah Drela and all the School PTA; to Julie (the cook), her daughter Rachel and all who helped with the fabulous food; to Jean Washbourne and her team of helpers; and to Keith Older for ‘pulling everything together’.

Thanks also to all those, including church members, the school and local businesses, who provided such generous gifts for the raffle, which helped the total raised on the evening to be a fabulous £1,000 towards our Development Fund.

St John's Roof Raiser

Upcoming Roof Raisers Events

At a packed meeting in St John’s school hall on Sunday November 4 2012, parishioners heard of the progress that has been made towards repairing the Ainsdale Parish church roof and reordering the church.

St John’s Church, Ainsdale has been closed for a year after the roof was found to be unsafe, but services have continued in the church hall. Reverend Graham Birch the vicar of St John’s has already raised over £3,000 from a gruelling triathlon in September but the full cost of re- roofing, underpinning and re-ordering will be in the region of £500,000.
