Plucky Pensioners Challenge

Ken Poulton's Sponsored Walk

Ken Poulton chose to celebrate his 84th birthday by walking the 21 mile Sefton Coastal walk from Crossens to Waterloo, to raise money for the St John’s Church Ainsdale Development Fund.

Supported and encouraged by his wife Muriel, Ken completed the challenging course over three days following his birthday on the 18th April.

Ken and Muriel have always been keen walkers and they have been members of St John’s church for over 50 years. Ken used to sing in the choir and has been church warden.

‘ I wanted to do something special to celebrate my birthday’ said Ken. ‘I have done the walk before and thought it would be a good way of raising money towards restoring the church roof.’

Lesley Phipps, church warden, said, ‘The sponsor money is still being counted.  Members of the congregation admire Ken for his great achievement and have given generously to the Development Fund.’

Church members need to raise £500,000 to restore the roof and re-order the church. Numerous fund raising events such as a Concert by Southport Orchestra, The vicar’s triathlon, and Christmas and Easter fairs organised by the Stitchers’ group have helped towards this total, but there is a long way to go before work can begin.

If you would like to sponsor Ken or buy a tile for the Church roof please contact Rev Graham Birch on 577760.
