The Stitchers

A Triumph of Stitching

Just A Sample Image

The vicar and congregation of St John's Church, Ainsdale had a special reason for celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Sunday June 3rd.

At a strawberry tea attended by over 100 people Graham Birch, the vicar, said special prayers to dedicate banners which have been made by ladies in the Stitchers Group. They have worked for three months to produce these beautiful wall hangings.

Since November 2011 the church building has been closed as the roof has been declared unsafe and all services have been held in the church hall.

The colourful wall hangings, influenced by the stained glass windows in the church, were designed to give a more hallowed feeling to a multi-purpose building. Jannice Crawford the leader of the stitchers group said: ' I hope that in many years to come people who attend St John's church in the future as well as today, will enjoy looking at these banners we have made in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and St John's Church.

Rev. Graham Birch spoke of  the community spirit which has been shown by the stitchers in making the wall hangings which will  enhance the hall and then the church for years to come. The occasion was also the official launch of the St John's Ainsdale Development Fund to raise money  to mend the roof and re-order the church to take this historic building forward into the future.
